Ludwig Wittgenstein

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) from Austria was one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. Every year, visitors from Norway and abroad and from different parts of the world come to Skjolden to experience the place where he was able to work in peace and quiet.

  • For first one must live - then one can also philosophize.

    Ludwig Wittgenstein - Skjolden 1937

  • I would like so much after all for everyone to have a good opinion of me! Even if it is a false one; & I know that it is false!

    Ludwig Wittgenstein - Skjolden 1936

  • I thank God that I came to Norway into the loneliness!

    Ludwig Wittgenstein - Skjolden 1937

  • "There is no one here," - but I can go mad all by myself, too.

    Ludwig Wittgenstein - Skjolden 1937

  • I am a person with little talent; may I nevertheless accomplish something decent. Because that is possible! I think.

    Ludwig Wittgenstein - Skjolden 1937

  • I can't imagine that I could have worked anywhere else like I do here. It's the calm and perhaps the strange landscape; I mean the quiet seriousness of the landscape.
