Enjoy the silence
In the fall of 2023, we at the Wittgenstein Foundation received a request from De Bedachtzamen in the Netherlands for an image from the Wittgenstein House to be included in an exclusive exhibition of selected, quiet workplaces. The idea behind it is to shine a spotlight back on the quiet in the monks' simple living conditions in the monastery. This was interesting and inspiring for us, very apt for our work, which is to show the workplace that the philosopher Wittgenstein found to be his best:
“ I do believe, that it was the right thing for me to come
here, thank God. I can't imagine that I could have worked
anywhere as I do here. It's the quiet and, perhaps, the
wonderful scenery; I mean its quiet seriousness. "
Our proposal to show these workplaces to visitors to the Wittgenstein House and other interested parties again aroused great enthusiasm among De Bedachtzamen. They have also been responsible for the layout and arrangement of the pictures on the barn wall. The pictures shown and several others have been published in a special small book called monk's cell. The book is printed in a numbered, small edition. Two of these books have been generously donated to us at SWiS.
